The Hunger Games retained its hold at the top of the box office, grossing an additional $21.5 million and upping its gross to $337 million. The Gary Ross directed film has now scored almost $500 million globally, a fantastic number for the $78 million movie. Roll on Catching Fire.
The Farrelly Brothers directed The Three Stooges had a surprisingly good debut, grossing $17 million over the weekend. Helped by decent reviews (read ours) the film is on its way to recoup its $30 million production budget. The film has been a labour of love from the brothers Farrelly, who have been trying to get a Three Stooges film off the ground for over a decade, and this gross seems to have justified the hard work.
Third place went to The Cabin In The Woods. The long delayed, but well reviewed horror film debuted with an solid $14.8 million. The Joss Whedon penned chiller stars Thor himself Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Connolly ' you can read our review here.
Titanic 3D sailed away with another $11.6 million and raised its cume to a great $44.4 million. The total domestic gross of James Cameron's film is now heading towards $700 million.
Comedy American Reunion dropped to fifth place, banking $10.7 million and upping its cume to $39.9 million. This fourth slice of American Pie won't be joining the other franchise installments in the century club.
Julia Roberts' fairytale Mirror Mirror won't have a happy ending ' grossing just $7 million over the weekend. The $85 million movie has matched its production globally, but this will take a while to get into the black.
Wrath of the Titans brought in $6.9 million, raising the Sam Worthington film's total to $71 million. The Warner Bros. release won't hit $100 million domestically, which is a big dip from Clash of the Titans' $163 million final gross. The sequel has now banked almost $250 million globally.
21 Jump Street brought its cumulative gross to $120 million after scoring a further $6.8 million.
The Luc Besson produced action-throwback Lockout had a disappointing start, grossing just $6.2 million (read our review). The Guy Pearce starrer cost just $20 million, so once international grosses and ancillaries are factored in it'll turn a profit.
The top ten was rounded out by animated hit The Lorax. The family film raised its cume to $205 million after grossing another $3 million.
