'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' Premieres on The CW in October

Dr Horrible on CW

Earlier this month, writer, director and geek-god Joss Whedon thrilled the nerd world at Comic-Con 2012 by announcing that his celebrated online musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will be officially making its TV debut. The musical tragicomedy's 14-minute webisodes will be rejigged into an hour-long special that will air on The CW on Tuesday, October 9 at 9 p.m.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is the brainchild of Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), along with his two brothers Zack and Jed. The little miniseries that could was created during the 2007'2008 Writers Guild of America strike and tells the story of an aspiring supervillain named Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris), his heroic yet cocky nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion) and the woman they both love, the ill-fated Penny (Felicia Day).

Although it's only had one 'season,' the online series became a huge hit with loyal Whedonverse fans and critics alike, while winning many genre-related awards. It includes 14 original songs, most of which were written by Whedon and his brother Jed, which were later released on iTunes for download. The series also sprang several tie-in comic books released by Dark Horse Comics (all written by Zack Whedon); the first three were released through Dark Horse's online comics anthology, Dark Horse Presents, the fourth was a special release as part of the One-Shot Wonders series.

As for the upcoming Dr. Horrible's sequel: since the announcement of its filming schedule a while back, Whedon hasn't said much about what we can expect out of Dr. Horrible 2, but he did tease some details, saying:

'Soon. We've got several songs near completion and we've got a very specific structure. We're going to do three prequels, but they're going to suck. We've been working on it for about two years. We have a bunch of songs, we know exactly where we're going. I can't wait to tell you more about it ' That's gonna start happening hopefully soon ' some of the actors in it are kind of successful!'

The 'they're going to suck' part is obviously typical Joss Whedon snark, but whether or not he was kidding about the prequel part as well remains to be seen ' but it wouldn't be a stretch. Whedon has likewise stated that the upcoming Dr. Horrible's sequel (or prequel) will also receive the television treatment at a later date.
