Since production began several weeks ago, season 3 of The Walking Dead hasn't exactly been shrouded in mystery. In fact, with series creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman taking point on discussing various highly anticipated additions to the series, fans should be well-educated on what they can expect to see when the new season kicks off this October on AMC.
After a long season on Hershel's farm that consisted mostly of characters bickering with one another, fans are certainly eager to see the series move past the slow circling-of-the-drain that led to the death of several key characters, so that The Walking Dead can now introduce players like the sword-weilding Michonne (Danai Gurira) and the infamous Governor (David Morrissey).
Even at first glance, the look of Morrissey as The Governor is considerably different from that of the comic book incarnation, an interpretation that will likely earn the ire of many an Internet commenter (because you can't be truly bad without a handle-bar mustache). Considering many had thought Danny Trejo would be perfect for the role, and actor Tom Savini actively campaigned to be cast as The Governor based on his own uncanny resemblance to the character, it should come as no surprise that in handing the role to Morrissey, the producers were interested in portraying the character's physical appearance in a completely different fashion.
Regardless of how The Governor looks, the more important factor should be the way in which he behaves ' and those who have witnessed the extent of his evil in the comic books, will undoubtedly be expecting a far more diluted version for the television series.
Not so, says Kirkman, who is eager to assuage viewers' fear that losing his signature facial hair and donning a tight-fitting vest will cause The Governor to somehow become a kinder, gentler antagonist for Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group of survivors to deal with.
Kirkman stated:
'The Governor in the show is definitely going to be The Governor in the comic, I think that he's definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He's definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.'
'Seeing The Walking Dead come to life on AMC has been a real thrill for me, obviously, and moving into Season 3 I'm even more excited than ever because now I feel like we're really getting to 'the good stuff. Having The Governor in the mix is going to fundamentally change the show in all kinds of awesome and exiting ways. And David Morrissey totally rocks!'
Perhaps, since season 2 ended with Rick laying down the law in regards to his expectations of the group, the introduction of The Governor will at first be an inviting alternative to Rick's increasingly demanding form of leadership that will only to turn into abject horror, as The Governor's true nature is revealed.
Either way, considering the important character additions, the change of locale (the prison), and hearing Kirkman describe season 3 as 'getting to the good stuff,' the next chapter of The Walking Dead sounds like a welcome departure from the slow pace of season 2 that many viewers found so frustrating. Additionally, with a villain like The Governor on hand to provide the characters a distraction from one another, perhaps season 3 will produce fewer meme-inspiring moments commenting on the parental skills of Rick and Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies).
