Movie News Wrap Up: June 23, 2012

This week:

Amber Heard is filled with Paranoia, Peet, Corddry Rudolph, Collette, Rockwell and Carell go Way, Way Back; Ivan Reitman gets Drafted by Paramount, Barbra Streisand helms Skinny and Cat and Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. It's true ' they really are.

Amber Heard looks set to join Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford in director Robert Luketic's Paranoia.

Heard stars in Paranoia

According to Variety:

'Hemsworth stars as a blue-collar guy who makes a costly and illegal mistake while trying to get ahead in his entry-level job. His boss agrees not to turn him in under one condition: he must infiltrate the competition as a corporate spy. Protag quickly learns that he's a pawn in his boss' game.'

Heard will play 'Hemsworth's love interest, an intended one-night-stand who becomes the key to his success as a spy when he learns that she works at the rival company'.

If Heard thinks that she's paranoid now, then she should wait until the tabloid press are finished with their Johnny Depp frenzy!

Paranoia starts filming in July for a September 2013 release.

Faxon and Rash direct The Way, Way Back

Faxon and Rash with Alexander Payne

Nat Faxon and Jim Rash direct the film 'about a teenager (Liam James) who comes into his own during the summer through an unlikely friendship with a local water-park manager (Sam Rockwell)'.

Toni Collette plays the boy's mother, while Steve Carell has been cast as her 'carousing boyfriend'.

Faxon and Nash won an Oscar for writing The Descendants, so expect this comedy/drama to be potential awards bait.

Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is attached to direct Draft Day for Paramount Pictures.

Reitman directs Draft Day

According to Deadline Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman's 'script revolves around the general manager of the Buffalo Bills as he spends the day of the National Football League draft frantically trying to get the number one pick for his struggling team'.

Reitman was once a comedy director to watch, having directed the likes of Twins, Ghostbusters, Stripes and Meatballs. However, it's tough to have admiration for a man who brought the world My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Father's Day.

Everybody's favorite Focker, Barbra Streisand is set to direct her first film since 1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces ' a film which saw her in the bizarre position of being caught in a love-triangle with Jeff Bridges and Pierce Brosnan! I suppose it's better than being caught between and rock and a hard place.

Streisand directs Skinny and Cat

Josh Brolin's 70 year-old step-mother will direct Skinny and Cat, a $20 million love story about writer Erskine Caldwell and his photojournalist wife Margaret Bourke-White. Apparently Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett are attached to star as the couple, with Firth playing Skinny, while I suppose Blanchett will portray Cat. Or maybe it's the other way round ' who knows?

The film will go ahead once Streisand gets the funding for the drama, a task which is proving to be difficult. I imagine it must be like choosing between a pre-Dude Bridges and a post-Bond Brosnan.

Bryan Buckley will direct, and the Reese Witherspoon will star in Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.

Witherspoon in Venus adaptation

The film is an adaptation of John Gray's best selling self-help book of the same name. The book is apparently the best selling non-fiction hardcover book of all-time (having shifted over 7 million copies)' bested only by the Bible and the Koran.

Luckily Lionsgate Summit picked-up the rights to the movie. Disney had been eyeing an adaptation, but they were going to re-title it Men Are From Wherever John Carter Ended Up, Women Are From Venus. Joke.
