Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: June 17, 2012

Rock Of Ages has a poor start

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted retained its grip at the top of the box office, grossing an estimated $35.5 million over the weekend for a total cume of $120 million. The film is on-track to match the $180 million final gross of Madagascar 2.

Ridley Scott's Prometheus also held its position from last week. The science fiction thriller dipped 60% from last weekend's launch, grossing $20.2 million for a $88.8 million total. By next weekend the film will have crossed $100 million, the first film in the Alien saga to reach the century number (unadjusted). Globally the film has grossed $217 million, again making it the highest grossing film in the series at the international level.

Star-studded musical Rock Of Ages (read our review) had a disappointing debut at number three. The big screen adaption of the hit stage show opened to just $15 million ' a low figure when you consider the heavy marketing blitz which put co-star Tom Cruise front and center. It would appear that few people care to 'know what love is.' The '80s set film carries a $75 million production budget, a number that it probably won't reach during its domestic run. The film also debuted internationally, grossing $4 million. The debut is behind recent musicals like Hairspray and Mamma Mia! which both opened to $27 million.

Snow White & The Huntsman chopped-up an additional $13.8 million worth of green, for a total haul of $123 million. The epic fairy tale has now grossed more than $200 million worldwide.

Adam Sandler delivered one of the weakest non-dramatic openings of his career with That's My Boy. The $70 million comedy should greet Monday morning with $13 million. The average Sandler comedy usually opens in the mid-$30 million range, and this is the actor's lowest start for an all-out laugher since Happy Gilmore opened to $8 million in 1996. It's also below last year's Jack and Jill, which grossed $25 million during its opening, on its way to a disappointing $75 million total.

That’s My Boy fails to open big

The best comparative Sandler movie to That's My Boy is probably 2000's Little Nicky, which had a $16 million start and a final total of $39 million ' a gross which his latest effort may not reach.

Men In Black 3 should bank $10 million for a cumulative gross of $152 million. The Will Smith starrer has now grossed over $544 million globally. It has the $589 million total of the franchise's first instalment in its sights.

Another $8.8 million gives The Avengers a domestic total of $586 million. The Marvel adventure has grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide.

The Best Exotic Marigold upped its gross to over $35 million after grossing another $2.2 million. The British comedy has grossed almost $120 million worldwide, and while it may not be Avengers money ' it is pretty impressive.

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom should raise its cume to $6.7 million. The quirky comedy is playing in less than 200 theatres, but it still managed to bring in $2.1 million over the weekend.

What to Expect When You're Expecting rounded out the top ten, grossing $1.3 million for a total gross of $38.7 million. It doesn't have much life left and it will never get the chance to hit $50 million at the domestic box office.

That's it for now. See you at the movies.
