A year ago, few would've predicted that Jonah Hill would go from being a graduate of Judd Apatow's raunch-com school (Superbad, Get Him to the Greek) to landing an Oscar nomination for Moneyball, co-writing and starring in a successful reboot of the 21 Jump Street franchise ' and securing roles in future weighty dramas like True Story and Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street.
Hill is poised to extend his win streak even further, now that he's set to appear in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. The actor previously passed on the project, because of his busy schedule, but due to either an unexpected opening in his work slate, or (more likely) a reduced role, Hill's now accepted the offer.
Deadline has the exclusive on Hill signing up for Tarantino's Django Unchained, which will not wrap principal photography for another few weeks. Nonetheless, the Weinstein Company has begun to build awareness for the film, by releasing both a domestic teaser trailer and international theatrical promo. The intent is to get people talking about (and debating) the nature of Tarantino's latest, button-pushing cinematic creation ' which is (unequal) parts historical revision, revenge fantasy, blaxploitation homage, and spaghetti western throwback.

Although Hill's role in Django Unchained has yet to be (officially) revealed, inside word is that he will not be taking on the part of Scotty Harmony ' the gambler who loses Django's (Jamie Foxx) enslaved wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), to the debonair but utterly despicable plantation/brothel owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Some of you readers out there may recall that's the 'glorified cameo' which was left up for grabs by Sacha Baron Cohen.
The Django Unchained cast includes all the aforementioned stars, alongside TV icons like Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and Gerald McRaney (Major Dad) ' plus, Tarantino favorites Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz ' with minor characters being brought to life by such folk as musician-turned actor/filmmaker RZA and Justified alum Walton Goggins and M.C. Gainey. Suffice it to say: this movie reads as a pretty crazy affair, even before you take the controversial storyline into consideration.
Django Unchained storms into U.S. theaters on December 25th, 2012.
