Joseph Fiennes in Talks for 'American Horror Story' Season 2

Joseph Fiennes Camelot

Even though we know American Horror Story will be welcoming back several key cast members ' such as Golden Globe winner Jessica Lange ' when the anthology series shifts from modern day haunted house to a 1960s home for the criminally insane, there are apparently plenty of plum roles for new recruits. Recent reports now confirm that former Camelot star Joseph Fiennes is in talks to join the show's growing cast, as the head of the very institution that will serve as the second season's setting.

Because this is American Horror Story we're talking about, in addition to his position as the head of the mental institution, Fiennes' character is rumored to be engaging in an interoffice romance with Lange's character. Despite the age difference, it is said Fiennes will be the 'object of her attraction' ' which suggests Lange will be taking on the role of pursuer. Beyond Entertainment Weekly being told the character is 'tortured,' the details on Fiennes' potential role are being kept under wraps, so no word whether the other inevitable weirdness will be intended to distract from, or put more of a spotlight on, this rather distinct pairing.

Signing up for season 2 means Fiennes will accompany newcomers James Cromwell (L.A. Confidential, Spider-Man 3), Chloë Sevigny (Big Love), French actress Lizzie Brocheré and musician-turned-actor Adam Levine, as they join returning cast members Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Zachary Quinto and Evan Peters (take your pick as to which actors will be playing doctors, and which will be playing guests of the institution).

However, the acquisition of Fiennes will also serve as a reunion of sorts, considering he appeared in Ryan Murphy's 2006 film, Running With Scissors (based on the memoirs of Augusten Burroughs), as well as a 2008 FX pilot titled Pretty/Handsome that featured the actor as a husband and father questioning his gender identity.

After making a splash in the Academy Award-winning Shakespeare in Love, Fiennes has balanced his time between feature films and television work. Lately, he has contributed his talents to canceled-too-soon series by giving a new spin on Merlin in the aforementioned Camelot and a starring role in ABC's high-concept drama, FlashForward.

On that note, it would be nice to see Fiennes acting in a more established program like AHS. Perhaps if things work out, and Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk can conceive another all-new tale of horror and suspense, Fiennes will find himself as one of that season's returning cast members.
